And now my dirty little secret is out. We have voted for Barack Obama and Joe Biden to lead our country for the next four years. Yes, 'we'. In our home, voting is a family affair. Madeline cast my vote during the primary, and Isabella cast my vote today in the general election. James will also vote for the Obama/Biden ticket next week.
I'm sure that many of you are now shocked and dismayed, and questioning my sanity/upbringing/patriotism and wondering when I turned into a Pinko Liberal Tree-Hugging Granola-Eating Hippie Commie. None of this is news to my immediate family, having seen the Obama magnets on my minivan back in the spring. Since Dad hasn't committed Seppuku in the front yard yet, I assume he's come to terms with my decision.
So why Obama? Because.
Because I want Universal Health Care.
Because I want the public schools in my country to be the best in the world.
Because I don't mind paying higher taxes if in doing so we accomplish those two goals.
Because I think we're fighting a losing war on terror.
Because I believe we need to take responsibility for what we are doing to the environment.
Because I believe the government should stay out of my bedroom and out of my church, and vice versa.
Because I want leaders who will think first and then act.
Because I am tired of living in a climate of fear and scare tactics.
Because I am willing to take a chance and HOPE for better things rather than keep the status quo.
Because I agree with Benjamin Franklin when he said, "They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety".
I have voted according to the dictates of my conscience, and I hope you will too. I'm sure I have changed no one's mind, or even swayed your opinion a little. (Maybe just your opinion of me, perhaps.) I'm okay with that. I was okay with that when I voted in the primary; when I donated money to the campaign; when I volunteered my time; when I put the magnet on my car for all the world to see.
So at the end of the day we'll just agree to disagree and be happy that it's okay to be different and not be a part of some scary Group!Think experiment, because, what would be the fun in that?
Now go and vote.

You do know James is not required to tell you who he votes for. It really doesn't matter who wins the election because how much can a president do anyway?
Umm, yes he is. :P
And if you really think it doesn't matter, Mom, you should go ahead and vote for Obama. Because, you know, it doesn't really matter.
uuughhhh, I don't want to talk politics but to each his own and we'll see in the next 4 years who made the "right" decision.
So, I guess that must have been some dang good kool-aid. It sounds like you drank the whole pitcher as well as Al Gore's share too.
Good for you for voting though, and excercising your right. I clearly don't agree with B.O. but we are all entitled to our opinions. I'll excercise my RIGHT to vote since we may have a LIBERAL SOCIALIST LEFTY in the white house and Congress and I may not have any rights by the end of next year.
You do know liberalism is a mental disorder right? Why does James HAVE to agree with you and vote for NObama anyway...doesn't he have same RIGHT as you do?
James doesn't have to agree with me. In fact, he voted for Romney in the Primary, and would have voted for him in the General Election had he won. If you remember James had lived with McCain as a senator in AZ for all of his life until he joined the Navy, and is well aware of McCain's track record, because it affected him personally as a resident of the state McCain represented.
You are two of the best parents I've ever known, so I can understand fully why you want significantly improved educational and health care systems. BUT, I strongly disagree with your voting decision. The cost of what you are asking for is something I can't fathom. I believe having Obama in the highest office in the land will cost us more dearly than anything the United States has been through. Still, you are certainly entitled to your vote now now...I don't know if you will have that right later. Rich
I have never told anyone, including husband or child, who I voted for in an election. I feel it is a very important and personal thing for me alone.
I know who Joe has already voted for and though he has also asked about me vote, he will have to wonder like everyone else.
I will just be glad when the political race is over this time. I am sooooooo tired of the negativity of the candidates, the ads, the whole thing! I just wish there was no political parties - just a person running for an office whether national or local.
So hooray to everyone who votes - it's our right and exercise it if you wish. God bless American and everyone who lives here!!!
I also voted, how I love early voting! I just wasn't as thrilled about voting this year as other years. I guess I'm just worried either way it goes. Politicians just bother me more over the last couple of years.
I was happy we didn't have as much local stuff going on, I always get stumped on local stuff, because I move so much, I don't know the local stuff.
It's cool that you shared your opinions. I know political opinions are very dear to each person. Aren't we lucky to live in a place where we can voice our opinions.
