I cannot tell you how proud you made me when I read your excellent piece. It made me laugh, it made me cry with pride and remembrance of recalling the sealing of our family in Mesa. I recalled the sacrifices made to take your mother to Washington, DC to get her marriage license paperwork completed so that she and your dad could be sealed in the Washington temple. I recall the stresses Uncle Les, Grandmother and I made to get to our sealing - car troubles, being purposely run off the road, the gas shortage, etc. You truly have a gift of writing. Keep up the good work!
Hi, this is Nathan Jarvis' wife Katheryn. I know we have never met, but in a way I feel like I know you because Nathan has told me so much about you. I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed your post about pioneer day. While I don't hate Pioneer Day (although I really do hate that it is in July) because I do love learning about church history, I couldn't agree more that Pioneer Day should really be a celebration of all of the pioneers of the church not just those that crossed the plains. I don't have any ancestors that pulled a handcart, but I do have Florida pioneer ancestors. My great-great grandfather joined the church in west Florida in 1899. He left an amazing heritage for his family. His decendants number more than 500, over 100 of which have served full time missions for the church. I think that he is someone that should be celebrated right along with those that walked and walked and walked aaaaaaannndd walked!
Aunt Carol, I'm so glad you liked it! I thought of you while I was writing it, because of your efforts to write down so much of the family's oral history.
Hi Katheryn!
I feel like I know you, too! :D Nathan is a great guy and I have nothing but fond memories of him.
Looking back, I should have siad I hate the Pioneer Day celebration and not the day itself. And it's mainly because it's too dang hot in late July to feel like celebrating *anything* outside! I read about your ward's celebration this year on your blog, and that sounded like a *lot* of fun.
I love learning about Church History too, and I think it's important that "church history" is being created RIGHT NOW. The church's explosion in Africa if fascinating to me, and the opposition and hardships they face *now* are just as great as the ones faced by the Pioneers.
I agree! Since I grew up in the church, and both sides of my family have been members of the church for years, I have never really experienced any kind of opposition to my faith. I think it is amazing the sacrifices that people are making all over the world today in order to be members of the church. I served my mission in Ukraine and there were people there who would walk (yes walk) 5 miles to church each Sunday morning. One family that joined had to give up their home because it was owned by the wife's parents and they disowned her when she joined the church. In order to become endowed and be sealed in the Temple, the members there would have to make a 36 hour bus trip to Germany. Thankfully, there will soon be a temple in Ukraine. There are people every where that should be recognized for their great faith and for their pioneering efforts to bring the gospel into their homes!
That is a great post! I relate too, and agree with your sentiments!! Thanks!
AAH, you almost make me miss the ward there in GA! It really is neat to learn the history of that area. There are some awesome members there, you included! Great Article!
I liked your article!
Wow! Some women really got off onto their own tangents! Yikes!
I've checked out that site a few times but never liked it because it's full of angry women.
Where will you be published next?!?
